Grounded on the author’s broad research on queerness and rurality, this performance looks at silence as expression and maintenance tool of the rural status quo in Central Italy. It juxtaposes pleasure with silence as an affective tool in areas left out of contemporary queer discourse. This act stages ‘the farmer’s secret’ and is based on performance research shifting back and forth between what must not be seen and what is secretly observed, silence as a form of control and subjugation, gestures alluding to fleeting curiosity, and encounter as a creation of otherness. Central to the movement’s research is the author’s video archive created before his birth: a story-portrait of his family’s farm. The archive displays the interplay between family and community. It shows how one shapes the other, and the other shapes the first. Family responds to community, and community responds to family, so that both stay alive, quietly relying on a dense and fragile web of gestures, relationships and exchanges. In rural contexts, silence flatten expression and ensures uniformity. Uncontrolled noise shakes fragility, and potentially destroy the web. This is the secret. Hierarchies within hierarchies, analysed in a physical act that explores the continuous shift from being an insider to being an outsider. This is a wandering attempt to analyse subordination, choosing to stay in an in-between state in search of noise through resistance and endurance.
