Oct. 2 – 20:30 – Lola Lieven – 25 min.
Lau Vander Mijnsbrugge
What is g*rlhood and who gets to define it? Throughout the performance the audience gets dipped in an aquatic world where they meet Poppy, a dirty fish, a vèry normal girl and a bodybuilder mermaid that aims to reclaim ideas of g*rlhood. Yet, reclaiming is a messy, awkward and confusing process. In her quest to reappropriate stereotypical ideas around g*rlhood, Poppy is confronted with millions of embossed biases, her own insecurities and projected sensualities. Trying to find her way through all this, Poppy drags the audience fully into the mess of it all.  The performance dissect questions such as how to redefine g*rlhood in queer terms and to cut it loose from the male gaze. By both using caricatures as softly nuanced jokes, Poppy uses laughter as a tool to expose the discomfort and violence queer bodies experience trying to fit in a heteronormative world.
